“Investor views about China remain pessimistic, partly because of skepticism about near-term growth momentum and partly because of worries about the longer-term outlook,” wrote Goldman Sachs analysts in a note on Tuesday.

China, home to more than 1.4 billion people, saw its population drop in 2022 for the first time in more than 60 years. A shrinking population means lower consumption. When Beijing made the announcement in January, global stocks were roiled. The Dow fell by 300 points and the Nasdaq Golden Dragon Index, which follows Chinese firms on American exchanges, fell by 4%.

What it means for markets: US-based companies doing business in China stand to lose if the economy continues on a downward trajectory. Companies like Apple (AAPL), Intel (INTC), Ford (F) and Tesla (TSLA) have large manufacturing ties to the country. Others, like Starbucks (SBUX) and Nike (NKE), rely on Chinese consumers.

Earlier this year, Bank of America (BAC) compiled a list of the S&P 500 companies with the highest exposure to China. Topping the list was Las Vegas Sands (LVS), down nearly 6% this month, with 68% of its sales coming from China.

Qualcomm (QCOM), with a 67% exposure rate to China, issued disappointing forward guidance during earnings last month, citing China’s slow recovery.

Tesla, Intel, Nvidia (NVDA), Wynn Resorts (WYNN) and MGM Resorts (MGM) were also among the 25 S&P 500 companies with the most exposure to China.

Companies that generate more than 50% of sales outside of the United States saw an earnings decline rate of -10.2% in the first quarter of 2023, according to FactSet data. Companies that generated more than 50% of sales inside the United States, however, saw an earnings growth rate of 2.7%.

Meanwhile, Chinese stocks trading in Hong Kong, just barely avoided entering bear territory this month: The Hang Seng index was down 19.6% on May 31 from its January high and the Golden Dragon China Index has fallen 5.6% so far this year.

JD.com (JD), one of the largest Chinese companies trading in the United States, has fallen by nearly 36% this year. Morgan Stanley and Goldman Sachs Group have both lowered their forecasts for Chinese equity indexes.

The bright side: There’s still potential for upside, say economists. Analysts at Nomura and Barclays forecast Chinese economic growth of almost 8% for the second quarter.

Ayaz Ebrahim, JPMorgan Chase’s emerging markets and Asia Pacific equities portfolio manager, recently said on Bloomberg TV that the bank is adding more shares of Chinese stocks to its portfolio in a bet that the Chinese government will back floundering companies and boost valuations.

Wildfires in Canada have smothered large swaths of the United States in a thick plume of toxic smoke, leading to air quality warnings and advisories to stay inside. But fine particles from the smoke can make their way indoors. Air purifiers can be helpful with filtering out the pollution.

Searches on Google have increased 16 fold since Monday, according to Google trends.

Whirlpool (WHR), one of the largest home goods manufacturers in the world, has seen its stock surge 13.2% over the past five days and by 6.4% on Wednesday alone. The company says that its HEPA purifiers can remove up to 99.97% of bad particles from air.

Shares of Carrier Global (CARR), which makes residential and industrial air purifiers and HVAC units, have gained nearly 11% over the past five days.

Johnson Controls (JCI), which has a number of air filters on the market, has also seen its stock price soar. Shares are up by 8.5% over a five-day period.

The air purifier market is poised to grow as climate change increases air pollution and exacerbates breathing difficulties. A Market Insights report forecasts that the industry is expected to grow at an annual compound rate of 10.8% to $2.9 billion by 2025, and $4.8 billion by 2030.

Outdoor air pollution could cause 6 to 9 million premature deaths a year globally by 2060 and cost $2.6 trillion annually because of sick days, increased medical bills and reduced productivity, according to an Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development report.

Sir Ivan Menezes, who served for a decade as chief executive of the largest spirits maker in the world, has died at age 63 after a short but aggressive illness.

Diageo confirmed Menezes’ death on Wednesday, just two days after the company announced that he was stepping down as CEO following complications from an emergency surgery on an ulcer.

Menezes was born in 1959 in Pune, India. He held UK and US citizenship, as well as overseas citizenship for India. He joined Diageo at its creation in 1997 and became CEO in July 2013. He was knighted in January by King Charles III for services to Business and to Equality. Prior to his illness, he was expected to retire at the end of June. COO Debra Crew, who was set to become CEO on July 1, will take on the role of interim chief executive, effective immediately.

Menezes, who ran the $93 billion company behind Johnnie Walker whiskey, Smirnoff vodka, Guinness and Tanqueray gin, was well known as a champion of diversity in the workplace.

About 40% of Diageo’s senior positions are held by women and 37% of its leaders are ethnically diverse.

“Ivan was undoubtedly one of the finest leaders of his generation,” said Diageo chairman Javier Ferrán in a statement on Wednesday. “Ivan was there at the creation of Diageo and over 25 years, shaped Diageo to become one of the best performing, most trusted and respected consumer companies.”

Under his leadership, Diageo’s market value nearly doubled from $52 billion to $93 billion. Menezes also successfully guided Diageo through the Covid-19 pandemic, delivering a net sales value 36% larger in 2023 than in 2019, Diageo said.

Retail investors are often seen as trend chasers, buying into stocks after they surge upward, but that’s no longer the case, he said. Empowered by platforms that allow them to trade quickly and cheaply, new access to market information and still armed with half a trillion dollars in pandemic-era savings, retail investors are making moves on their own instead of following the so-called smart money of institutional investors.

“These investors are a lot more contrarian than people think,” added Coffey.

But these trades are risky and while an institutional investor might lose their job for making a big mistake, a Main Street trader could lose their shirt.

The world’s largest crypto exchange is in trouble.

The US Securities and Exchange Commission filed a 136-page complaint against Binance and its CEO Changpeng Zhao on Monday where they accused the company of misleading its clients, mishandling billions of dollars and running an illegal exchange.

“Through 13 charges, we allege that Zhao and Binance entities engaged in an extensive web of deception, conflicts of interest, lack of disclosure, and calculated evasion of the law,” said SEC Chair Gary Gensler.

A spokesperson for Binance said the company takes the SEC’s allegations seriously, but it believes the agency’s accusations are “unjustified.”

“We respectfully disagree with the SEC’s allegations that Binance operated as an unregistered securities exchange or illegally offered and sold securities,” the company said in a statement. “Because of our size and global name recognition, Binance has found itself an easy target caught in the middle of a US regulatory tug-of-war.”

But the SEC says that Binance was well aware of this rule breaking. The SEC complaint included a pretty damning remark from Binance’s chief compliance officer, who told a colleague in 2018: “We are operating as a fking unlicensed securities exchange in the USA bro.”

That doesn’t sound good, bro.

Economic uncertainty abounds, but people are still flying high.

Global airlines could make about $10 billion in profit this year as they benefit from a post-pandemic travel boom, forecasts the International Air Transport Association (IATA).

IATA on Monday more than doubled its 2023 profit forecast for the global airline industry, reports my colleague Hanna Ziady.

Airlines are expected to make $9.8 billion in net profit in 2023, up from a December forecast of $4.7 billion.

Stronger profitability was supported by cargo revenues, China’s reopening and lower jet fuel prices, IATA’s director general Willie Walsh said in a statement.

Seema Shah:

Still, a lot of the data focused on the labor market is showing some very strong resilience. And you throw that in with the high inflation numbers that have been coming out recently and there’s a clear picture of economic strength. There are segments of the economy like manufacturing which are struggling, but other parts, like services, are still very strong. And as long as the labor market in particular is adding jobs at this level, it’s very difficult to see a scenario where inflation can come even close to a 2% level. Even getting it below 3% is going to be very difficult this year. So I think there’s a very strong case to be made that there will be another hike in the next two meetings.

Some investors are still betting on a rate cut this year. How realistic do you think that is given recent data?

It seems incredibly unrealistic. The labor market is typically the most lagging indicator within a slowdown. It’s usually the last to fall and when it falls, it typically spirals fairly quickly. I think that’s what a lot of people are hanging their hat on: In the fourth quarter of 2023 you’re going to see a very sudden deterioration in the labor market. Maybe that is possible. But at this stage it’s incredibly unlikely that there will be enough weakness in the labor market to push inflation down suddenly. Our view is that there won’t be any rate cuts this year. The market just needs to price that out.

Why do you think that inflation seems so impervious to the Fed’s rate hikes?

It has been very strange and certainly our own expectations were that the labor market would deteriorate more than it has. It’s a surprise to everyone out there.

The surge in labor demand was so strong post-pandemic and that is still sticking, and if you look across the service sector — if you go into a restaurant or a hotel or a retail shop — it’s very evident that there’s still a lack of labor supply at this stage. So even as you start to see labor demand dropping that won’t necessarily imply job losses, so you need to see more weakness than typical for employers to start getting rid of jobs.

But this is a bit of a rolling slowdown, you have seen some sectors struggling and some sectors doing really well. So in some sectors, you are hearing about job losses, but it’s just not a blanket situation, and certainly the service side is just so strong.

The strength of the consumer is also still there — they still have about half a trillion dollars left in excess savings. So you have a strong consumer and strong labor market essentially supporting each other for the time being.

Are investors and the Fed aligned on where rate hikes should go?

There is a lot to be said about the lagged impact of rate hikes, and for the Fed to take the time to digest what the impact is, but they are getting to the point where a policy error is very easy to make. As you move towards the end of the cycle, there’s going to be a ton of market volatility around expectations for rates, and I think the Fed will be looking through a lot of that market noise. Markets are still pricing in rate cuts this year and that has to be priced out.

One of the key criticisms of the Fed over the last two years has been communication. And Fed speakers gave such a clear indication of what they wanted to do in June last week ahead of an important jobs report, which was slightly bizarre. It’s a dangerous policy to prepare the market and give forward guidance when you’re very data dependent.

Americans are very good at spending money.

The strength of the US consumer is a prime reason that the country’s economy remained afloat as the Federal Reserve hiked interest rates 14 times and as geopolitical tensions envelop Europe, Asia and the Americas.

The resiliency of shoppers has also taken the economy safely through a banking and debt ceiling crisis.

But that might not be the case for much longer, Bank of America CEO Brian Moynihan told CBS’ “Face the Nation” on Sunday.

Americans “were earning more money and they were spending it, what you’re seeing is that’s dipping down,” he said.

Moynihan said the Fed’s tightening policies has “had its effects.” Consumer spending for Bank of America customers is slowing down year-to-date.

“That level is more consistent with a 2% growth economy and a 2% inflation economy, not a 4% inflation level economy,” Moynihan added.

Saudi Arabia announced Sunday that it would cut oil production by another 1 million barrels per day for at least a month starting in July. The decision is part of an effort by the OPEC+ group of producers to increase oil prices.

What’s happening: Oil has had a rough year. Global prices have fallen as demand sputtered in the United States and China — the two largest economies in the world.

After spiking above $130 a barrel in March 2022, Brent crude oil prices, the global benchmark, have nearly been cut in half, report my colleagues Mark Thompson and Michelle Toh. Brent is down about 11% since the start of the year.

Plaintiffs said in a complaint filed in Manhattan federal court on Wednesday that “Musk and his company, Tesla, wrongfully profited to the tune of billions of dollars on the backs of millions of working Americans” by shilling the meme token.

The amended complaint, which is the investors’ third change since the lawsuit started last June, contains a fresh allegation that Musk sold dogecoin worth about $124 million after he switched Twitter’s logo to a shiba inu dog in April. That caused the token’s price to surge by 30%.

The amendment was reported by outlets including Reuters.

Musk, who is once again the world’s richest man, is a longtime dogecoin fan.

In April 2021 he called himself “The Dogefather” on Twitter. The following month he said the token was “the future of currency” on an episode of “Saturday Night Live.”

Musk played down that support at an event in London last week, saying he wasn’t advising anyone to “bet the farm” on the cryptocurrency.

Dogecoin – which was created as a joke and has no practical use cases – surged in popularity during the crypto boom of 2021 but has since cratered. It’s trading at just over 7 cents – 90% below the 68-cent peak on May 8, the day before Musk’s “SNL” appearance.

The sources said cuts could amount to 1 million bpd on top of existing cuts of 2 million bpd and voluntary cuts of 1.6 million bpd that was announced in a surprise move in April.

3M Co has struck a tentative settlement of at least $10 billion with a host of U.S. cities and towns to resolve water pollution claims tied to “forever chemicals,” Bloomberg News reported on Friday, citing people familiar with the matter.

Hours earlier, chemical companies including Chemours Co, DuPont de Nemours Inc and Corteva Inc reached an agreement in principle for $1.19 billion to settle claims that they contaminated U.S. public water systems with the potentially harmful chemicals.

3M was scheduled to face trial on Monday against the City of Stuart, Florida. It was not immediately clear whether the trial will proceed.

Stuart claims that company made or sold firefighting foams containing per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, or PFAS, despite knowing for decades that the chemicals can cause cancer and other ailments. The city has said it is seeking more than $100 million from 3M to pay for water filtration and soil remediation.

JPMorgan Chase & Co’s President and Chief Operating Officer Daniel Pinto said loan demand is declining at a time when regional and small banks are also tightening credit.

“There is no doubt that regional banks and smaller banks are building up liquidity, building capital, so they are lending a bit less,” Pinto told investors on Friday. “I don’t think that the big banks have really changed their lending standards… there is not a huge amount of loan demand in the first place.

“Consumption remains positive, but there are some indications the economy is slowing, Pinto said. He expected the Federal Reserve to raise rates further.

“Likely the Fed will get to run towards 5.5% and then they will pause” to assess whether efforts to curb inflation have succeeded, Pinto said. If inflation accelerates further, the Fed could raise rates 50 basis points with a series of smaller rate hikes, he said.

Chemours Co, DuPont de Nemours Inc and Corteva Inc on Friday said they had reached an agreement in principle to settle claims that they contaminated U.S. public water systems with toxic “forever chemicals” for $1.19 billion.

The chemical companies are facing thousands of lawsuits in the U.S. over their alleged role in polluting the environment with perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl, substances (PFAS) that have been used for decades in manufacturing nonstick coatings such as Teflon.

The companies, which deny the allegations, svaid that they expect to finalize a formal agreement by the second quarter of 2023. Chemours said it would contribute half the agreed amount, while the remainder would be provided by DuPont and Corteva.

Chemours will take a pre-tax charge in the current quarter of $592 million related to the fund.

Jamie Dimon, the chief executive of U.S. bank JPMorgan Chase & Co, is visiting Taiwan on Friday, a source with direct knowledge of the matter said, his first trip to the island in a nearly a decade, after concluding a visit to China this week.

Dimon’s trip to Taipei, where JPMorgan has had a banking presence since 1970, comes amid heightened tension over the democratically-governed island, which Beijing claims as its own territory. Taiwan strongly rejects China’s sovereignty claims.

But China, which bristles at visits to Taiwan by foreign government officials, tends to ignore trips by business executives, who usually keep clear of politics.

“The Chinese are much more concerned about U.S. government contacts with Taiwan than they are with private firms and banks doing business,” said Andrew Collier, managing director at Orient Capital Research in Hong Kong.

Volkswagen will start selling battery-powered versions of its VW bus in North America from 2024 onwards, the carmaker said on Friday, in what marks the reintroduction of the iconic model after a two-decade hiatus.

The introduction of the fully electric ID. Buzz will also include an extra-long version that can seat up to seven passengers and features a larger 85 kilowatt hour (kWh) battery to increase range.

“With the T4 generation, the VW bus left the USA and Canada 20 years ago. But the microbus – as the VW bus is called between New York and San Francisco – has retained its cult status right up to the present day,” Volkswagen said in a statement.

All ID. Buzz vehicles for the North American market will be built at Volkswagen’s plant in Hanover, Germany, the company said, adding batteries could be charged from 10%-80% in 25 minutes at available rapid charging stations.

Barclays Chief Executive C.S. Venkatakrishnan held a virtual town hall this week to address management changes that have led to about two dozen U.S. investment bankers fleeing in the last few weeks, people familiar with the matter said.

The bankers have left for rivals including Citigroup Inc, UBS Group AG and Jefferies Financial Group Inc, Reuters has reported. Venkatakrishnan’s intervention underscores the pressure that the British bank is under to protect its U.S. investment banking franchise.

Barclays slipped to 14th from sixth in Refinitiv’s Americas mergers and acquisitions league table in the first quarter of 2023, even as it jumped from ninth to fifth in the Europe, Middle East and Africa league table, as its U.S. dealmakers struggled to preserve market share amid a slowdown in transactions.

Venkatakrishnan promised during the meeting to invest in the investment banking business to boost morale, the sources said.

Boeing Co. CEO Dave Calhoun on Friday said progress on resolving supply chain problems has been “frustratingly slow” even as airlines’ demand for planes has bounced back to pre-pandemic levels.

Boeing has seen progress in certain elements of its supply chain, such as engine forgings and castings, Calhoun said.

But the ability for aircraft makers like Boeing and European rival Airbus to meet customer demand for new planes will still be constrained “five years from now,” he added.

“We’ve got to be smart about how we manage supply against that demand spike,” Calhoun said at the Bernstein annual strategic decisions conference.
